The Government is providing £1.2 million to support the Urban Eco Settlement programme of Leeds City Region.
With this funding, work can begin on all four urban eco settlement sites in the region - at Aire Valley Leeds, the Bradford-Shipley canal corridor, North Kirklees and South Dewsbury and York Northwest.
The announcement was made by the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) on Tuesday.
Under the scheme, up to 28,00 new eco homes will be constructed, meeting the highest standards of sustainability, including good public transport and low and zero carbon technologies.
Environmental upgradation will be made on 10,000 more existing homes under the scheme, which is likely to create up to 44,000 jobs.
Councillor Andrew Waller, chairman of the Leeds City Region housing panel and leader of the City of York Council, said: "This is a very positive step forward that the government is now providing funding to develop the Urban Eco Settlements in the city region."
