A Leeds-based plastics website is being used as an online DIY community by visitors looking to solve problems around the home, it has emerged.
Barkston Plastics said users of the site, which was launched last September, have turned it into a internet forum by exchanging ideas and advice for how to use recycled plastic for repairs. The site, which sells products manufactured from the material, has enjoyed a strong customer base since its launch.
However, the visitors' appropriation of it as an advice forum has fuelled a trend to use recycled plastics instead of traditional materials. Innovators have so far suggested a wide-range of uses for the material, such as home repairs, splash backs, greenhouses, cloches and double glazing.
The firm said the recession was behind the rise of the forums, with thrifty customers looking to save cash. Tim Kiernan, managing director of Barkston Plastics, said the novel uses were arising from consumers trying to find low-cost solutions to problems.
He added: "We are now providing products and services for large numbers of site visitors and finding a real appreciation for honest advice, outstanding service and a fast turnaround."
